Agni

Importance of digestive fire (Agni)

What is digestive fire?

Digestive fire (Agni) resides in our digestive tract (from mouth to anus) for the digestion of the food. Agni helps in digestion, absorption, and assimilation of the ingested food. This Agni is present in each and every Paramanu (particle) of the body. Agni, one of the Mahabhutas (elements) of our body, has been divided into 13 types, out of which Jatharagni, Bhutagni, and Dhatvagni are closely associated with the digestion. The Jatharagni digests food and transforms into Rasa and Mala. The Bhutagni nourishes the Bhutas in the body and Dhatvagni helps in the formation of Dhatus.

Why digestive fire is necessary:-

Agni controls digestion & maintains a healthy state of body, mind, and soul by producing energy from digestion, absorption, and assimilation of food. Internal Agni is helpful in maintaining the skin luster or complexion. It also maintains body temperature or heat in the body. It is a natural source of high energy (Ojas), strength & vitality for tissue nourishment.

What happens when digestive fire is inadequate?

Agni is classified according to Doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). When all Doshas are in a balanced state, it is called Samagni. If Doshas get imbalanced due to improper dietary habits, like taking of heavy meals, overeating, consuming too much tea or coffee. The inadequate Agni creates room for "Ama" (Toxin/waste accumulation). Such undesired materials get deposited inside the channels (Strotas) that cause various types of diseases in the body. The imbalanced Agni is further divided as given below:

1. Visham Agni (Irregular state of Agni) - The wrong dietary habits (Vata Vardhak Ahar - Vihar) create vitiation of Vata and cause Visham Agni. In this case, the food is not digested properly leading to several problems like flatulence, colicky pain, & low backache.

2. Tikshan Agni (Hyperstate of Agni) - The excessive intake of spicy food (Pitta Vardhak Ahar-Vihar) aggravates the Pitta. This Tikshan Agni results in an intense state of digestion & metabolism. In this case, a person eats greater quantity of food and suffers from acidity and burning sensation.

3. Manda Agni (Hypostate of Agni) - Eating cold food decreases the digestive fire (Manda Agni). In this case, the metabolism gets slow down & person suffers from several problems like decreased appetite, cold, cough etc.

Ayurvedic herbs to improve the digestion:-

1). Shunthi (Zingiber officinale)- It improves digestion by stimulating the pancreas to release pancreatic enzymes. Its Bhedana property helps in relieving from constipation, hyperacidity, and stomach ache.

2). Marica (Piper nigrum)- It is a natural Deepniya. Its Chedna Karma property improves the digestive power, relieves anorexia, & stomach aches.

3). Pippali (Piper longum)- Pippali helps by aggravating the Pitta. The natural ingredients present in Pippali stimulate the Agni which further improves the digestion and metabolic efficiency.
