undefined IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) 2 Mar IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) Are you experiencing an upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation frequent bathroom trips, and embarrassing cancellations to events due to symptoms of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome? IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a mix of belly discomfort or pain and trouble with the bowel habits which may either be going on more or lesser than the normal or having a different kind of stool that may be hard, soft, liquid or thin. Ayurvedic perspective of IBS (Grahani Rog) Charaka samhita, well-known Ayurvedic classics, describe irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) as gastrointestinal problem with recurrent abdominal discomfort and mention it as Grahani Roga in Ayurveda. As per Ayurveda human body is made up from the essence of 5 basic elements viz. Prithvi (Earth), Jala (water), Agni (fire), Vayu (air) and Akasha (space). These elements combine to form the Tridoshas (three vital factors) which govern the existence and functioning of the human body and mind. Prithvi and Jala combine to form Kapha, the basic cementing substance. Agni and Jala combine to form Pitta, the basic metabolic component of the body. Vayu and Akasha combine to form Vata the driving force/energy which is meant for all activities taking place in our system. Shasti pittadhara nama kalah; yaa purvam samudhdritaha l Pakvamashyamadhyashta grahani saa prakirtitaha ll Ayurvedic script defines the major function of Pittadhara kala i.e. digestion of food and absorption of digested substances. In Ayurvedic view the improper eating habits and psychological factors such as mental stress cause disturbance in the "Jathar Agni" (digestive fire) which is the root cause of IBS. Agni is located in the Grahani which is called duodenum. Due to vitiation of Agni the digestive fire becomes weak & food is not digested properly. The undigested food gets acidified in the body and gets accumulated in the form of toxins. Types:- According to dominant Doshas, the Grahani can be classified as:- Vataj Grahani:- Constipation is the predominant symptom which is caused by Vitiation of the biological air. Pittaja Grahani:-Diarrhea is the predominant symptom which is caused by Vitiation of the biological fire. Kaphaja Grahani:-Dysentery is the predominant symptom which is caused by Vitiation of biological water. Sannipataja Grahani:-Alternate symptom of diarrhea and constipation which occurs due to the vitiation of all three biological humours. Conclusion:- The IBS as per Ayurveda can occur as a result of the following process:- Vitiation of Doshas (Vatta, Pitta and Kapha) Weak digestive fire (Mandagni) Formation of Ama Oja Kshayam (decreased immunity by various reasons) Thus Ayurvedic pathology provides the possibility to build individualized treatment modules according to causal factors .The Doshas can be identified and should be eliminated in order to regain the functions of the digestive system. That can stimulate enzyme activity (Agni) that is present in all cellular functions and remove any undigested substances (Ama) that had accumulated with time. The first line of body purification therapy is called Shodhana chikitsa, this eliminates the lodged Doshas of Grahani site via.Vaman (Emesis), Langhanam (fasting), Laghu Anna Seven (consuming light food) & Pachanam (improved digestion) that naturally promote the function and integrity of the gastrointestinal tract. In Rasayana prayoga, minerals are used as rejuvenating drugs. Medications, Yoga and Pranayama are also advised as they are beneficial for the mind and increase stress resistance. Other methods used in natural solution of IBS:- Jathar Agni chikitsa (correction of digestive fire) Lakhanika chikitsa (symptomatic ) Additionally, depending upon the type of IBS such as IBS-D,IBS-C Grahi, Anulomana and mild laxative herbs are recommended.
