Time to stem the tide of obesity

When your weight is in a healthy range, your body circulates blood more efficiently. The body weight generally imbalances due to the inadequate calories expended vs. consumed. This condition is called obesity. Obesity is a chronic, relapsing, progressive disease which leads to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and even stroke. It also promotes the manifestation of gallstones, osteoarthritis, and respiratory problems. Not only the dietary regimen, but poor sleep/sleep deprivation can also cause obesity.

As per Ayurveda, obesity occurs due to Meda. The excessive nourishment of Meda causes mal-nourishment of other Dhatus. The activities such as Divasvapna (sleeping at daytime), Avyayama (lack of exercise), and Shleshmala Ahara Sevana (intake of foods rich in oils and fats) leads to Kapha accumulation. In Ayurveda, obesity is treated with Medohara herbs along with dietary corrections. These herbs convert Medo Dhatu into Asthi Dhatu and also remove the obstructed Kapha. Additionally, massage with specific oils (Abhyanga), herbal powders/pastes (Udwarthanam), and herbal steam bath help to mobilize the accumulated fat.   • Take 1 cup of water. Add 3 tsp. of lemon juice, a pinch of powdered black pepper and 1 tsp. of honey. Mix well and drink it 2 times every day for 1-2 months.
  • Take 2 tsp. of Triphala powder, a commonly available Ayurvedic herb and mix it in 500 ml water and heat it for 5 min. Now filter and drink the same twice a day.

  • Bibhitaka (Terminalia belerica), Aamalaki (Embica officinalis), Mustaa (Cyperus rotundsa), Haritaki (Terminalia Chebula), and Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) help in lowering fat.
