Ayurvedic Treatment for Leucoderma (White patches treatment): Ayurvedic Treatment for Vitiligo (white spots treatment)
In Ayurveda, the symptoms of vitiligo and leucoderma can be compared with Kushta. Due to faulty food habits like Viruddha Anna, improper lifestyle, not following Panchkarma protocols, and eating food during indigestion, the Tridoshas get vitiated and affect the Rasa Dhatu, Rakta Dhatu, Mamsa Dhatu, Meda Dhatu, and Lasika Dhatu. If Rakta Dhatu is vitiated, the red in colored patches will emerge. If Mamsa Dhatu is vitiated, the copper colored patches will appear. If Meda Dhatu is vitiated, the white patches will be visible. As per Ayurveda, vitiligo and leucoderma are referred to as Kilas/ Shwitra which are Tridoshaj diseases [caused by vitiation of Tridoshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) together]. It has also been mentioned that a regular intake of inappropriate diet combinations (Virudh Aahar Sevan) can lead to this condition.

Leucoderma vs. Vitiligo
Vitiligo and leucoderma are Latin words containing almost similar meaning as defective blemishes on skin and white skin diseases respectively. Vitiligo may be a specific type of leucoderma and is often, used interchangeably with the term leucoderma. Moreover, after the white patch formation, the line of treatment remains the same in both cases. The only noteworthy difference in both is the cause of their onset. Vitiligo is often self-generated. However, leucoderma can appear after a skin injury, allergy, chemical, and cosmetics.
Types of vitiligo
There are two distinct types of vitiligo, 1) Non-segmental vitiligo and Segmental vitiligo.
A. Non-segmental vitiligo:- If the skin condition result in symmetrical white patches it is known as non-segmental vitiligo. The development will be slower if the patches are in only one area of the body. The non-segmental vitiligo is most occurring, accounting for up to 90 percent of cases. In this case, the white patches appear on both sides of the body with similar measures of symmetry. The common area of non-segmental vitiligo includes armpits, groin, arms, backs of the hands, elbows, eyes, feet, genitals, knees, mouth, navel, nose and rectal area. Further, if there is no specific area or size of patches, it is known as generalized non-segmental vitiligo. If depigmentation occurs mostly on the fingers or toes, it is known as acrofacial non-segmental vitiligo, depigmentation appears mostly around the mucous membranes/lips, it is known as mucosa non-segmental vitiligo, depigmentation covers most of the body, it is known as universal non-segmental vitiligo.
B. Segmental vitiligo:- It spreads more rapidly and less erratic than the non-segmental vitiligo. It is more prone to occur in early age-groups and white patches are non-symmetrical. It often affects the skin attached to nerves arising from the roots of the spine.
In the medical community, it is believed that leucoderma/vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder of the skin. This autoimmune disorder leads to the destruction of melanocytes. The state of autoimmunity allows the body's immune system to indulge in self-destruction. Hence our own immune system starts killing its own melanocytes. Sometimes, vitiligo /leucoderma can also occur due to malformation of melanin or its evident loss from the skin. Thus, formed white patches gradually get enlarged and their pattern may merge and spread simultaneously to cover most of the skin area.
